Walking to the Bridge
October 17th, 2007“I’m going to walk to the bridge. If one person smiles at me on the way, I will not jump.”
This was a note that was discovered in the apartment of a man in his early thirties after he jumped to his death from the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1970s.
What a powerful story about the importance of such a simple act. A face may launch a thousand ships but a smile can change the world.
I discovered this not too long ago in an article about suicide prevention week. So today’s post is for all of you out there that need a smile (which I think is everyone). You are not alone and people do care. These smiles are for you! Now go out and return the smile to someone today.

I wanted to return the favor: http://flickr.com/photos/bohdel/442088518/
In walking my own black dog I began to see the difference a person’s smile or “good morning” could make in my day — something so simple and easy — so I’ve tried to make a point of looking more people in the eye and smiling. Not easy for an introvert, but every person I smile at, or compliment, takes me a little bit away from the girl afraid of being noticed, and it helps to feel I may have made a small difference in someone’s day.
Thank you for your blog. I was sorry to read about your friend yesterday. You’ve touched me with a number of your posts.

although I own my own black dog, I decided years ago always to be kind and smile at people, or talk to the old women in the neighborhood. that lightens up dark days :-).
P.S. sorry for my awful english.
