The Mindful Way

January 5th, 2008

Years ago I came across the book Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life by Jon Kabat-Zinn. I liked it so much I followed it up with another of his books, Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness. Well written and easy to understand, both books deal with the practice of mindfulness and how it can enhance out lives.

Now Kabat-Zinn has teamed up with several other experts in the field of mindfulness and cognitive therapy to write The Mindful Way through Depression. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. Whether you are walking a black dog or just want to understand your mind & emotions better, this book will take you through the process of understanding and implementing the practice of mindfulness in the treatment of depression. It also includes a CD with several guided meditations as well as an 8 week treatment plan.

If you’d like to know more about mindfulness just take a look at this video. It’s over an hour long but well worth the time. Enjoy

Thanks for recommending this book - The Mindful Way through Depression. I picked it up from the library this afternoon. I need serious help with stopping my endless rumination - I hope this book will show me how.

(BTW, I had forgotten what a wonderful resource the library is.)

    Faith,

The library is a great place. You should be able to find all of Kabat-Zinn’s books there. I hope the copy you picked up still has the CD in it.

Stick with it and remember what they say about the mind and thinking - it’s in its nature to jump around. Be patient and practice ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’. Good luck.
