War and Remembrance

October 14th, 2008

When I visited my father the other day I decided to try the video feature of my little digital camera. Dad was in a very good mood. Being in this particular home, where he gets a lot of personal attention, has really helped him a lot. He’s put on weight and his mood has stabilized.

I edited this video so that you don’t get all the repetition of stories. As you can see he has moments of great clarity. Dad was stuck on repeating the story about how the owner of the drug store that he worked in while attending Kansas State University in 1941 had an elderly father who couldn’t drive any more. They hired dad to drive him around. This arrangement allowed dad to have a car to drive and so paved the way for him to take mom out on dates. I asked dad about his early courtship of mom, their marriage and going off to war shortly after getting married. He went to France and then Germany in 1944.

I love the smile dad gets when talking about asking mom to marry him.
